Year 8s find out about STEAM careers
On Friday 4th March Year 8 girls from Chilton Trinity and Clevedon Schools were invited to participate in the Young Data Minds event, held at We the Curious, Bristol. Sponsored by Lloyds Bank and Kubrick Young Data Minds is a national strategy to raise awareness and aspiration of girls towards STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and creative industries and Mathematics). Held on the top floor of We the Curious Young Data Minds included keynote presentations by Sophie Grey, Director of Data and AI at Microsoft, Ijaz Akram, Chief Technology and Platform Officer for Lloyds Banking Group and Dr Suzie Imber, Space Scientist, lecturer of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leicester and winner of BBC’s “Astronauts: Have you Got What It Takes”.
All three speakers provided inspiring, engaging presentations to the invited audience of 90 girls from 10 schools from across the Southwest and really helped to demonstrate fascinating insights into where STEAM can take young people in terms of future career paths. The girls also participated in a number of break-out, interactive problem-solving challenges throughout the course of the day, where they were able to put their knowledge of STEAM to the test.
The event provided the girls with a positive experience of STEAM and a flavour of how they can use their current learning to develop future ambitions.
