Students participate in real-life law experience @ Chilton @ Clevedon
On Wednesday 9 February, Clevedon Learning Trust welcomed representatives from four major Law Firms to work with students from Clevedon School and Chiltern Trinity School.
The event gave Year 10 - 13 students the opportunity to thoroughly experience legal tasks. Alongside a specialist from each law firm, they completed interactive activities in Family Law and Employment Law, Legal Technology and Professional Support. In summing up one Year 10 Clevedon student expressed: “I thought it was really informative and inspired me, plus we had the opportunity to be involved. It showed that law is more than wigs and a grave!”
Law Firms representatives included those from Womble Bond Dickinson, Foot Anstey, VWV and Royds Withy King. Katie, from VWV, described how she “really enjoyed meeting the students. It was wonderful to see such inspiring young people, who will undoubtedly make wonderful professionals in the future”. Emma, also from VWV, and Skye, from WBD, added “it was a real pleasure visiting Clevedon School. The students were really engaged and enthusiastic”.
This was the first event in a series, being run by a group of firms in Bristol. This pilot, held at Clevedon School, was designed to give students real-life work experience and an employer encounter. With an increasing number of businesses being unable to offer in-person work experience, the recently formed group have been working together to offer real-life legal experience for students in schools across the region. A Year 10 student, from Chilton Trinity School expressed “The Clevedon Law Event was an eye-opening experience that has given me insight knowledge of the day-to-day life of being a lawyer and the many aspects of law available to have a career in,” whilst a Year 11 Chilton student explained: “The future lawyers event opened my eyes to various different areas of law and gave me a first-hand experience of family law. We also learnt of a completely different side of law with legal technology and how law firms are improving their services. All in all a great experience!”
Head of Careers and Destinations for Clevedon Learning Trust, Mark Davies said “Gaining real life work experience for students is invaluable for their learning and future career aspirations and we are excited as this was the first in a series of professional career events which will be held at Clevedon. It has also been inspiring to bring students together from across the Clevedon Learning Trust to share in this positive experience and ambitions for the future,”.
The working group of law firms is being led by Sam Lee (Head of Recruitment at WBD), Ellen Marsh (Careers Advisor at Clevedon School and Executive Consultant at Motus Legal Recruitment) and Sarah Cook (HR Director at VWV).
