Dogs Help Children to Read

Clevedon Learning Trust children helped to read by cute dogs and their school's popular dog mascot

Pupils at Mary Elton Primary School in Clevedon are learning to read by reading to cute dogs including their own school mascot dog called Ava.

The Reception children get to meet and share stories with dogs from the Little Orchard Dog Training Academy.

After reading they get to stroke and cuddle the dogs.

Reception teacher Julie Kinsley said: "It's proving very popular and very successful. The children gather around in a small group and read a big book to the dogs. Everyone enjoys the experience and has a great time.”

Alex Palmer from Little Orchard Dog Training Academy said: "We bring in 4 or 5 dogs who will settle on mats, the children or handlers will read to small groups of three to four children.

"Older children can read the book to the group, often taking a page each in turn, but the inclusion of the dog promotes confidence as the idea is that the dog will not judge if a word is mispronounced."
